Tonight we can look at the second half of this verse ,which we started looking at last post, Last post we looked at God statutes, How Jesus fulfilled all of Gods laws, and then we looked at the song of the Christian.
We can look at the second half:
“…in the house of my sojourning”, or “in the house of my pilgrimage”.
In the second half of this verse we are faced with something which we all must go through, we are here confronted with a pilgrimage, one which we all are part of from the moment we are born to the moment we leave this earth we are all on this journey.
So we can take a look at this journey and ask three questions about it :
1. Why must we sojourn ?
2. How should we sojourn ? OR How do we sojourn ?
3. What will happen at the end of our sojourning ?
We can look at each of these three questions from the Christian and non-Christian perspective. Look at the common world view and then compare it to what the bible says.
Firstly we can look at the question “why must we Sojourn?” , why do we have a life ?
This is a question that has been posed by many people for many centuries, it is also a question that many people have tried to answer, just look at the many religions and beliefs that there are in the world.
There are around 21 major religions and several hundred smaller religions, each of them providing a different answer as to how we are here.
A. So firstly we can look at the question from the non-Christian viewpoint.
Those who deny that God created all things, turn to believing in supposedly scientific viewpoints instead.
We wont go deep into the scientific arguments about the big bang, or any other arguments like that, but what we can say is, that at the most basic level the big bang theory states that :
“at some point billions of years ago, this tiny speck, which was just there, exploded and in that explosion the universe was started, and after 15 odd billion years of, after lots of things randomly coming together, here we are, sitting here tonight listening to this. Nothing more than the results of a random explosion for no reason what so ever.
This is the most common belief of how we came to exist, and if that is true, if all this came from a random explosion 15 billion years ago. Then we live in very sad circumstances. Every good thing in life has no meaning, all our loved ones , all our memories are nothing but the result of this random explosion. Then there is no meaning to anything what so ever.
Here is a quote from the Christian philosopher , William Lane Craig :
““”If there is no God, then man and the universe are doomed. Like prisoners condemned to death, we await our unavoidable execution. There is no God, and there is no immortality. And what is the consequence of this? It means that life itself is absurd. It means that the life we have is without ultimate significance, value, or purpose.”
If there is no creator then we are not created, we are nothing more than a collection of space dust and coincidences.
But how blessed we are that Gods word does not give us this absurd explanation for why we are here, instead in the bible we find many verses explaining that we were created on purpose by a master creator.
The universe around us was formed and set into motion by him, in regards to the universe and the stars we Psalm 147 verse 4 and 5 tell us this :
“He determines the number of the stars
and calls them each by name.
5 Great is our Lord and mighty in power;
his understanding has no limit.”
We again see this is Job chapter 38 : verses 32-33
“ “Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades,
Or loose the belt of Orion?
32 Can you bring out constellation in its season?
Or can you guide the Great Bear with its cubs?
33 Do you know the ordinances of the heavens?
Can you set their dominion over the earth?”
So God perfectly created and maintains the stars, planets and constellations. But also the earth itself he made perfectly, and he made it so he could place man kind on it, Isaiah 45 verse 12:
“ I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, [even] my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded.”
And thirdly unlike the random creation of star-dust and evolution that the world tells us led to life, we find in Gods word that it is God and God only who created life. Not only that but we find that God made mankind different to all the creature, the non christian view says that we are nothing or nothing different to the animals arround us, but Gods word says that he made in his image and he gave mankind a soul.
So the world tells us that we are nothing but coincidences, that live out meaningless lives in a world that happened by chance that is in a cold and indifferent universe.
But the Bible tells us that that we are created in the very image of God, we live in a world that he himself created, which exists in a universe that has every star named by the God who created it.
The world says we live a life without reason, whilst the bible says we were created for a reason.
2. That brings us to our second question “How should we sojourn ?”
We have just looked at how we are here, the next question that must be answered is again a huge question, “what is the point of life”, Again we can look at this question firstly from the non-Christian point of view.
Some say the point of life is to be happy, this is what many people have as their philosophy, as long as you are happy then life has a point. But we all know just how fragile our happiness is, the illision of happiness can be shattered due to the smallest of things.
Others say the point of life is material wealth, to have things is to be happy, and of course we are happier , for a while, with a nicer car or a better paying jobs, but we all know that the money will of course one day run out, and how often do we see stories in which those people with lots of money still feel as if they are missing somethignfrom their life. I was reading the other day about a binman from down south, he won several million in the lottery, within two years he had wasted it all away and ended up back as binman, and in debt.
Many offer freindships and relationships as the point of life, but relationships end and friends will let us down.
Of all the things the world offer us to us as the point of life, none of it lasts, it all dissepates, it all runs out and it all leaves us wanting more. The worlds answer to the question, how should we sojourn, is an answer that is lacking of any true or lastinf fullfillment.
But Again it is not so with God, the Christian has been given a very simple and direct point of life. We can find this point summed up for us in the first catechism, which most of us know: “
Q. 1. What is the chief end of man?
A. Man’s chief end is to glorify God, [a] and to enjoy him for ever””
Unlike the world which offers temporal things as the point of life, for the Christian the point of life is to worship God, to find their joy in God.
The Christians joy is a joy that is founded in God, its a joy that cannot be shaken, because it has its base on the one who is the same yesterday today and tomorrow. Exp….
The question must then be asked why does the christian joy in God ? 1 Corinthians 6:20 :
“ For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
We must joy in God because through the death of Christ we were covered by his blood, a fact which although we know, we will benefit from hearing often.
The Christian has a duty to serve their brothers and sisters and to serve the wider community.
That is why Christ formed the Church so that together we may grow in knowledge of him and also grow together , not just as a group of Christians, but as a family.
A family that will assist each other and offer love and support , first thesolonians 4 verse 9:
“Now concerning vbrotherly love wyou have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves have been xtaught by God yto love one another, “
and first thessolonians 5 verse 11:
“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.”.
This type of community and support is very much lacking in the world, that is what results in many societies being set up. They offer a type community, but in the Church we have the only community that is solely loved and protected by Christ.
But as well as loving one another , the Christian has a duty to be a witness to the world. To tell those around us about Christ, what he has done for us and what he can do for them also. We are all familiar with the words of the Great commission in Matthew 28:19+20 :
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. ”
See if we are not Christians we live a life seeking after many things to no real avail, like we said the money runs out, the relationships end , and we leave this world as we entered it.
But for the Christian , because their lifes purpose is following an eteranal and unchanging God they live a life that although has many ups and downs, times of sadness and hurt, ultimately it is a fulfilled life that leads to an eternity with God.
3. That leads us to look at the third question “ How will our sojourn end ?”,How will our lifes journey end ?
We are all too well aware that one day our sojourning will come to an end. When that day comes, nothing else will matter bar one fact, not your hobbies, not your bank balance, nothing. The only thing that will matter is did we love Christ, cry out for forgivness and give our life over to him ?
Our eternal home balances on our answer to that question.
If the answer is no, then there is no leeway, there will be no bargining.
As we see from Matthew 25 and verse 41:(This is talking about Jesus)
““Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels.”
But as you sit here, if you are not a Christian, there is hope, as it says in Second corinthians 6 verse 2 :
“For he says, “In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. “
As you sit here, listening to this, if nothing else tonight – listen to this verse, write the reference somewhere, second corinthians 6 verse 2.
No matter why you dont think you can be a Christian, you have no excuse. Today is the day of salvation, if you turn to Jesus, call out to him for forgvivness and trully love and believe in him.
So if you give you life ouver to Jesus, then what is the future of the Christian ?
When this pilgreamge ends and the christian breathes their last, there is no doubt about what awaits them, God does not go back on his promises. In revelations 21 verse 3+4 it says:
“He will dwell with them, and they will be his people,b and God himself will be with them as their God.c 4He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
What more can could we ask for ? What else could we desire.
James montgomery writes about this in his hymn, behind the Vale of tears:
“The world can never give
The bliss for which we sigh;
’Tis not the whole of life to live,
Nor all of death to die.
Beyond this vale of tears,
There is a life above,
Unmeasured by the flight of years,
And all that life is love.
Here would we end our quest:
Alone are found in Thee,
The life of perfect love—the rest
