Saved And Set-Apart Sinners

“14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance,15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” – 1 Peter 1:14-16

For a first joint blog post I think we have started off with a biblical principle that is so important yet so easy to skim over. The word holiness appears 698 times in the bible, but I know I’m guilty of thinking nothing much of the word or it’s many implications on my Christian life.

This is my first joint blog and I’m bound to repeat many things that have been said before , but it would be worrying if we didn’t share the same ideas and info on some things relating to Holiness.

When the idea for this blog first came into my head these verses in 1Peter came with it , it’s a call for The children of God to be Holy because God himself is fully holy.
So I guess before we look at the verse we better start with the question “what does holy mean ?”
In the most simple way to be holy means to be consecrated/set apart for the use of God. To be made different by God do he can then use you.

We can see from verse 14  that the call to be holy does not go out to the whole world it only goes out to the children of God.
Only Gods children can be Holy , as only God can transform someone I to being Holy
The same way as doing good things and being a nice person , going to church and reading your bible doesn’t make you into a Christian doing these things will not make you Holy either.
When a person is Saved and becomes a child of God the person is a new creature as we have it in 2 Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
When we are cleansed form all our former and future sins we are made perfect and clean in the sight of God. We are now Holy – clean and set apart , able to be used by God for his purposes.
To be Holy is therefore a reason for absolute humility before God. It is acknowledging the fact that : although he saw all my sins the obvious and outward ones , the ones I hide in my mind ,all the ones I Knowingly commit, although he knew I would try and go my own way many times , he knew I would drift away from him and be a disobedient child . He still cleansed me and set me apart to be a worker fr him. it’s the same for every Christian we are set apart to be workers for God.

When Christ Died for you and for me on that Cross he covered over all our sins and made us perfect before God, It is only because of Christ are we deemed Holy and set apart by God.
If Jesus had not willingly offered up his life for us then we could not even know the name of God never mind be cleansed by him – Because of Christs love and sacrifice for us can we say
“Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.”

We can now move on to look at how Holines should look in our lives, verse 15 in our text tells us to be holy in all our conduct so how should this play put In our life ?
In Colossians 3 :12 we have a description of how the now set apart children of God should act :
“12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,
13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.”

We are not to strut around proclaiming our difference from the rest of the world , although we are totally different we must be loving and meek – knowing that we were made Holy by God not by anything that we did ourselves.

At this point its good to remember that Holiness is a state of the soul rather than any outward acting – but if our soul has been cleansed and set aside by God then our actions should reflect this.
We are called to be different from the world around us. We all know the paraphrase from John chapter 17: “we are to be in the world but not of the world”.. But how are we to live this out practically in our life ?
There are enough different  ways that Christians to be different to the world to write hundreds of blogs on but Ill just point out a few black and white and self explanitary  that we are told in Gods word, and if you find yourself feeling uneasy or disagreeing with these points then take it to your father in Prayer :
“Don’t become partners with those who reject God. How can you make a partnership out of right and wrong? That’s not partnership; that’s war. Is light best friends with dark” -”Corinthians 6 :14

“Stop getting drunk with alcohol, which leads to wild living, but keep on being filled with the Spirit”-Ephesians 5:18

“But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,”-Matthew 5:44

We are set apart to be Gods servants in this world, to be shining lights for him. The Great “I Am” who sacrificed all to us from our darkness and who set us apart is the same which created the whole universe and designed the atom. We should be humble sons of this God and give our all to serve him and not taint the Holines which was given to us through the Shed blood of Christ
D.L Moody put it well by saying :
“A holy life will make the deepest impression. Lighthouses blow no horns, they just shine”
